Thursday 7th Feb Cooking for Carnival!

New words learned today… tambien (also), basura (litter), semaforo (traffic lights) parque (park)

Attended my second Spanish class this evening with the residents but already I can’t remember a lot of the words… we were learning about the city (La cuidad)

Well, today we had the cooking class and we made Flores de Carnaval. I discovered these are a cross between doughnuts and pancakes. We made a thin batter type mixture (seerecipe). Then you have a frying pan with about 2” of hot oil in it. You take the special mould which looks a bit like a branding iron in the shape of a flower. Put it into the hot oil to make it hot, then dip it into the batter until it is about half way up the mould, after which you put it back into the pan of hot oil, tap it onto the bottom of the pan until the mixture drops from the mould you then turn this over and it should be browned and cooked (takes just a few seconds). These are then dipped in sugar and cinnamon….. Yummy ….

Now, a funny story…. there is a client I have been working with who doesn’t smile a great deal, and is very quiet. The flores de carnival were made today and supposed to be kept for the festival party tomorrow. However we looked round at one stage to see this client with a big grin on his face as he was tucking into the sweets!!!!
Another client remembered making them as a child, it was great fun and very funny to see clients telling one another it wasn’t done this way and taking it off one another as they remembered making them….Even with my limited Spanish this was quite evident at times..!!!
