New words learned today… Encantado (pleased to meet you) Mujer (wife) learned as a client introduced me to a member of staff at dinner this evening as his nuevo mujer (new wife!)… Espalda derecho (straighten your back, used in the gym this morning with a Spanish client), izquierdo (left) derecho (right) delante (in front) la reina (the queen) vaca (cow).
It was a busy day at work today, as it was the carnival party so first thing this morning I was exercising my creativity decorating the assembly room in readiness for the occasion. Everyone (clients and staff yes, and me – I had a guinness hat to wear!!) dressed up for the celebrations as different characters, a cow, the queen, tourists, Charlie chaplin, a clown, cat, rabbit, Dracula.. etc… I do have photos but most are of clients so will not post on blog. The auxillary staff had prepared a song which they performed, prizes were awarded for the colouring competition which has been running and two of the clients did a dance one of which is aged 96 and you would not believe it…! We had drinks and of course ate the flores de carnival which went down very well….!!
Today my supervisor has announced to most staff that I am keen to learn and practice my Spanish, which is true however the consequence is that most of the staff now try speaking to me in Spanish, on average I understand about every 5th – 30th word!!!! It is very sporadic and I am very slow, even when I do understand I can’t always think of the right response in Spanish – very frustraing. I keep having to ask people hablar despacio por favor (speak slowly please)..!
Today I have found out where the laundry is (on site) and been introduced to the lady who is to do my washing (hurrah, no chores for 8 weeks, could get very used to this..!!) the girls from last year have already warned me not to give them anything too precious, so I have also been to hypercor (the supermarket) this evening to buy hand wash liquid, so I can do some stuff in my apartment!
After work this evening I went for a long walk along the beach with my camera (will upload some pics) and then to find the bus stop from Marbella as I think Jasbir is coming to spend the weekend. I have discovered we can walk to Marbella along the beach (it is about 6km), so that maybe something to do tomorrow and get some lunch then walk back. Then on Sunday there is a market nearby so perhaps we will go there and have a look if we have enough energy – I think we are both pretty shattered though!!
