Spanish Customs

In addition to learning about occupational therapy here and trying to get to grips with the language I am keen to absorb as much about the culture as possible. Therefore I have discovered bits about some of the customs in Spain from my supervisor.

Christmas/New Year…
Christmas presents are not exchanged here in Spain over Christmas instead they have the festival of kings on the 6th January which is when presents are exchanged to represent the kings giving presents to the baby Jesus. Christmas itself is a family occasion with meals with the family etc and similarly at New year it is a big family occasion and meal and at midnight for each strike of the clock they eat a grape to see out the old year and in the new.

Lent
In Spain they don’t give something up like we do for lent, instead, every Friday they do not eat meat, only fish (although as yet I am not sure how long this is for… whether it is for the same as our period of lent..)
