Life goes on here…

New words (there are lots but here are a few) Tengo (I have) cancion (song) Trebol (clover) gafas de sol (sunglasses) helado (ice cream) abeja (bee) camiseta (t shirt) verano (summer) primavera (spring) despues (next) besos (kisses)

Well the day to day routine is much the same here whilst remaining flexible (if that is not a contradiction in terms!). Each day you see things that you have to somehow turn a blind eye to as things here are quite different to the UK from communication (much more direct I think) to manual handling and sometimes the speed at which some of the auxiliaries work (they all work very hard but occasionally with less attention to the fact they are dealing with a person no matter how dependent the person may be, mind you I am sure this happens in the UK as well just that I haven’t been exposed to it).

I had a rehearsal today for Monday’s challenge…!! Work wise, I spent a small amount of time trying to get someone to use the computer who used to know how but has forgotten as a result of something like a stroke. I have also working with a dementia resident to encourage them to feed themselves (which is slow progress). There is also the daily work in the gym in rehab and spent sometime with a resident who we are trying to teach to walk again.

Today I also ran the memory class today (in English) but what I did must have been ok as the psychologist used the worksheet and translated it into Spanish for her Spanish class today…!!

Then the day was rounded off with “healthy back” class (basically floor exercises to strengthen the back and stomach) followed by Spanish class where I learned words associated with spring and summer..!!

Following work I went to retrieve my clothes from the laundry (or at least see if they were around) as there was no-one around I had a good poke about and found them with the label on them saying “HOTEL” which I have looked up and does mean the same as in English… so am a little concerned that I may have upset them in the laundry as it felt a little sarcastic to me but not sure if that is the case… Anyway, I returned the little box and hangers they were in and on with a note saying Muchas gracias para mi ropa… Besos Jill Apartamento 417!!! Not sure if the Spanish is correct but hopefully it will get the message across as don’t want to upset them…!!

At last…. the past 2 days we have had some sunshine – so much so that one of the ladies who serves at lunch (catering assistant) dances with me every lunchtime that the sun is shining and says hace sol (it’s sunny!!) dread to think what the residents (or my supervisor) thinks…!!!

Finally you remember I said about being flexible here… well I found out today from a resident that Thursday here is Andalucia day and therefore it is a bank holiday in this area (all the shops shut etc – yes a proper bank holiday not like now in the UK!!). I am not sure as yet whether that means I am off work on Thursday or not…. Flexibility….!!
